About

The title of this blog is a reference to the term  red diaper baby as in the book Red Diapers: Growing Up in the Communist Left, by  Judy Kaplan and Linn Shapiro.

I did not grow up in the Communist Left in the US.

I grew up in the alternative, intellectually questioning, progressive Judaism of the 70s and 80s- mostly Reconstuctionist with some Renewal and some Havurah thrown in. Meanwhile I attended Jewish day schools- first a Labour Zionist one (which was rapidly losing its ‘Labour’ roots) and then a Community (basically Orthodox) high school. I continued with some Jewish studies at university and worked in Jewish programming at summer camp.

I currently  live in Toronto (Canada), work  in university research administration and have 3 children, and am parent at two different Jewish  day schools and attend two shuls.

This blog chronicles the effects growing up in a progressive, intellectual, feminist Jewish community on my perspectives on theology, liturgy, community, practice and parenting.

This is a list of all Aurora Mendelsohn’s published and blog writing

Ms. Mendelsohn, the is no dispute of facts only the organization and application of those facts. after over 20 plus years in the business of day schools as a parent, board, treasurer and president (twice !) i can tell you that the primary fact is that PEOPLE LIE about their income. the tax return only tells what is reported not what the TOTAL income of the individual or household is. i have seen many people say openly, i dont report all of my income to the IRS, etc. we have seen folk buy new cars, large homes, extravagant vacations and then tell the school, there isnt enough money for education. UJF does not fund education enough, the communities do not support education enough and the only time the crisis occurs is when Jewish continuity ends; intermarriage, etc. as with every facet of life, if folk paid the fair share organizations would not be spending so much time and money on fundraising but rather on programming and teachers salaries and improving the most critical treasure: OUR KIDS ! good luck in your efforts to increase funding for Jewish education but dont be naive about how folk lie about their resources, are quick to complain, slow to pay even slower to volunteer. those are the facts.

    Dear Ms Mendelsohn —

    I hope this reaches you.

Thanks for your article in the Forward (in which you quote me…). I have drafted a reply, which I will be happy to share with you if indeed I press the ‘send’ button. It would be helpful if you could send me an email address. I’d like to discuss some of the issues you raised, perhaps bring you up to date with the current school, and also – perhaps – discuss your own children. I am amused to see that you are the author of ‘Bubbie and Zaidie were hippies”, which I have often quoted; and that you list Donniel Hartman on your blogroll. He is speaking at TanenbaumCHAT tomorrow (Weds 9 Nov, 8:00PM) evening – if you are able to come, please introduce yourself.

Look forward to hearing from you,

    Paul Shaviv / pshaviv@tanenbaumchat.org
