The title of this blog is a reference to the term red diaper baby as in the book Red Diapers: Growing Up in the Communist Left, by Judy Kaplan and Linn Shapiro.
I did not grow up in the Communist Left in the US.
I grew up in the alternative, intellectually questioning, progressive Judaism of the 70s and 80s- mostly Reconstuctionist with some Renewal and some Havurah thrown in. Meanwhile I attended Jewish day schools- first a Labour Zionist one (which was rapidly losing its ‘Labour’ roots) and then a Community (basically Orthodox) high school. I continued with some Jewish studies at university and worked in Jewish programming at summer camp.
I currently live in Toronto (Canada), work in university research administration and have 3 children, and am parent at two different Jewish day schools and attend two shuls.
This blog chronicles the effects growing up in a progressive, intellectual, feminist Jewish community on my perspectives on theology, liturgy, community, practice and parenting.
